During lockdown there has been an increase in fraudsters carrying out sophisticated scams that threaten victims with bailiffs or police action if they don’t pay large tax bills on the spot. One particular con sees victims being contacted by what looks like a genuine HMRC phone number. They are then told that they have an outstanding tax bill which has to be paid immediately.
To our clients:
We must stress that HMRC will never use email, text message or a phone call to tell you about a tax rebate or penalty information. If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from HMRC and pressing for payment, please get in touch with us at Foxley Kingham or GKP before parting with any money. We can check the authenticity of the request and advise you accordingly.
There is also a host of information on the HMRC website about how to spot a scam and how to report it, you can access it here.Â
